1967 Corvette Convertible
1967 corvette convertible – C2
The 1967 year model of the Chevrolet corvette was the end of the mid-year body model known as C2. When first introduced in 1963 most people could not believe what they saw, the C2 was a huge step in both design and aerodynamics. It featured lines and shapes never seen before and although hide-away headlights were not a new invention it sure came to special use in the design. Some compared the C2 to a rocket ship because of the split rear window, others to an UFO because of the for the time extremely alien design. Although the C2 at first was planned to only be a coupe public demand made Chevrolet but together a convertible version in just a couple of months. Although the convertible version lacked some of those very special design details found on the original it became the favourite among the two of them, people wanted to feel the wind in their hair.
1967 corvette convertible – From the outside
On the outside the 1967 corvette convertible saw very little change from earlier models, with a winning design like the 1963 original there were little need of changing. The split rear window was dropped as early as in 1964 because of the safety risks involved. The fake hood vents was dropped at the same time but only because they made the design too busy. The story goes that the hood vents first was the real deal but were later found to leak hot engine air into the passenger compartment, so instead of removing them from the start they were made fake and then removed one year later. The 1967 corvette convertible has two special features, the “big block” hood vent and the gill-like vents located between front wheels and the doors. The “big block” hood vent was also known as the stinger and was a highly characteristic design addition to the “big block” version of the corvette, the hood vent had a contrasting colour to accentuate the difference further.
1967 corvette convertible – From the inside
On the inside the 1967 corvette convertible was pretty much the same as the 1963 original except a few details. Still looking as the cockpit on an airplane the 1967 corvette interior was much more discrete than the original when it came to colour. The dashboard still hade the same shapes and the form of the glove compartment was still a mirrored copy of the instrument panel. The main differences was the removal of the trusty old “sissy-bar”, a handle for the passenger positioned just above the glove compartment and that the emergency break ended up between the two seats. The new position of the emergency break made it reachable for everyone in the vehicle and also gave the 1967 corvette convertible on of the internationally founded sports car details.
1967 corvette convertible – Experimental details
Since 1968 was going to give birth to the C3 model of the corvette, a model fit for the coming law regulations for smog and safety, the 1967 corvette convertible and coupe became the test platforms for many new safety technology including an energy absorbing steering column, a thicker dash pad and shatter rear view mirror with a break-away mount. The vehicle also saw safety details such as mushroom shaped knobs and a special directional signal function for highways which would make handling the vehicle easier. Because of this the 1967 corvette convertible was slightly ahead of its time.
