1967 Corvette Coupe

1967 corvette coupe – C2

The C2 model is known as the mid-year generation which lasted between 1963 and 1967. The design was a giant step forward, not only for the corvette but for the car industry in general. The design was futuristic and aggressive without being too alien or brutal and people compared it with rocket ships, UFOs and predatory marine life. The lines and forms were surely exciting and with the hide away headlights and split rear window the car was something that no one had ever seen before. Obviously the car was a huge success and only a few changes were done over the years until a brand new design was needed in 1968 because of stricter regulations for smog and security.

1967 corvette coupe – Exterior

There was very little change in the exterior design for the C2 model over the years, and the 1967 year model was no exception. The split rear window was dropped because of safety reasons in 1964 together with the fake hood vents that were said to make the design too busy. Instead the 1967 year model enjoyed a five holed gill-like vent between the front wheels and the door. The “big block” version of the 1967 corvette coupe also had a rather special hood vent today known as the stinger. The stinger was extremely distinct and was even painted in a contrasting colour at the factory to draw attention. These two features are only found on the 1967 corvette coupe and convertible and are what makes it unique, at least on the outside.

1967 corvette coupe – Interior

On the interior the 1967 corvette coupe had kept its design from the airplane cockpit but was much more discrete when it came to colour than the earlier versions. The same lines were seen and the glove compartment on the passenger side still shared the exact form with the instrument panel on the driver’s side. Between the two seats were still a clock and the controls for the ventilation and the radio positioned but new for the 1967 model was that the emergency brake also was located there. It gave the corvette a better definition as a sports vehicle and made the emergency brake reachable for everyone in the vehicle. The 1967 year model of the corvette also saw the removal of the so called “sissy-bar” located just above the glove compartment.

1967 corvette coupe – Test base

Because the 1968 version of the corvette were going to be an entirely new vehicle much of the new technology that were going to be used was tried out in the 1967 corvette coupe. Both safety features and environmentally friendly engines, never before seen in a corvette, found their way into the 1967 version. Mushroom shaped knobs and a special directional signal function for highways made driving easier and safer than before and were features that made it into the new C3 model. The 1967 corvette coupe also had an energy absorbing steering column, a thicker dash pad and shatter rear view mirror with a break-away mount to keep the driver and passenger safe in the event of a crash. It is not much compared with the technology of today, but back then it was a tremendous change.
